As the elevator doors opened, two men rushed through the doors. One of them, a big ape, reached out a huge hand and grabbed her arm and bundled her inside with the cart. A skinny guinea moved in behind them. “Which floor,” he barked in her ear. She pretended to panic and fumbled around- eventually pressing the third with her free hand.
“Who are you?” she asked, knowing full well who he was. Sammy De Maggio, no less. “What do you want?”
‘Sammy’ told her to shut her mouth and wait until they got into her apartment. “I’m not going to harm you,” he lied. “Just a lot of questions, Emmy Parton.”
She feigned surprise. “How do you know my name?” she replied, but the ape gave her arm a violent twist. “He told you to shut your mouth,” he repeated.
Emmy stared at ‘Sammy’ with a little girl look on her face, wide eyed, all innocent and sweet. “He’s hurting me,” she said, her bottom lip quivering. The ape was going to twist her arm again, but ‘Sammy’ put out an arm to hold him back. The protective male coming out.
“It’s okay Mike,” he said in a gentle voice, staring back into her deep brown eyes. “Enough of that. She’s coming quietly.”
She nodded and lowered her gaze modestly, letting his eyes wander all over her body. If that doesn’t do it, she thought, I’m dead. Then a horrible thought struck her, what if he was gay? But both Jake and Mason had told her he was too macho for that, and then she relaxed again as his hand started to feel her up a bit. She pretended to wriggle away in alarm, make him work for it.
The elevator stopped at the third. Emmy pretended to resist once more, but the big ape held her arm tight. She walked them up to her apartment door, swinging her hips as she went. ‘Sammy’ beside her, now being the perfect gentleman and wheeling the briefcase cart. No sign yet that he would dispense with Mike and send him back to their car. Shit. This part of the plan wasn’t working out. She took out her keys, but ‘Sammy’ held her back and took hold of them. He gave the keys to Mike. “Check it out.” he said. “Take her with you. I’ll wait here.”
Now she was in deep shit.
Mike shrugged his shoulders and opened the door. He tossed the keys back to Sammy, pushed Emmy inside and told her to sit down and be quiet. Emmy watched him give a cursory glance at the living room, all tidy and clean like no one lived there, the kitchenette similar, and he then moved into the bedroom. She heard him slowly walk through into the bathroom. There was a rustling noise. Sounded like he was pulling at something. He came back into view and beckoned Sammy inside. “It’s clean,” he said. “You want her tied up?” he asked, showing Sammy a thin blue cord. The one from the shower curtain.
Sammy nodded, and pushed the cart into the kitchen area. “Just her arms,” he told Mike. “Better to take preventative measures, you never know with women.”
Emmy looked pityingly at him as Mike bound her arms behind her back expertly enough to prevent her from slipping her torso between them, like some contortionist. She pretended to panic. Kept looking alarmed. She whined. “You said you weren’t going to harm me.”
He put on a big cheesy smile. “Like I said, just a precaution.”
She put on a little girly voice. Added flattery. “What can I do against two big men?”
Sammy grinned. “Only one big man. That’s me.” He turned to the ape. “Mike, finish up and go and stay with the limo outside. I don’t like leaving it parked up in this neighbourhood with no one around guarding it. Also, keep an eye out for cops, but don’t disturb me unless it’s an emergency.” He smirked, and took out ten bucks. “Grab some takeout, it might be awhile.”
Emmy heaved one more sigh of relief. The plan was holding up. So far. Now she only had Mason to deal with. Big question. That’s if, he was hiding in the walk-in. The big ape mobster couldn’t have checked it out too well, she hoped. Otherwise she was in trouble. From the oily grin on Sammy’s face, she knew only too well what he would do to her, before even getting around to asking her questions. Well she still had one card to play if she needed it. Jake’s modified plan. She hoped it would be enough.
She thought back. ‘This is what we’ll do. I’ll arrange to meet BG in Wal-Mart, close by. Anna, you pack a backpack full of paper; get there as soon as I call you and stay in the restrooms next to the fast food outlet. After BG gives me the money, I’ll go to the bathroom, you give me the backpack and I’ll switch contents in an empty cubicle. That money will be my safeguard against either of them killing me. And don’t think about taking it all for yourself unless you want the mob after you. Or Coach Mason, if he gets to you before the cops take him down.’
