Anna marked her notes. “And if he comes up with a big fat zero?”
“Let’s see how it goes first. The one advantage we got is Mason doesn’t know we’re looking for him. He might not even know who we are.”
Anna stopped writing and chewed on her pen. “That’s conjecture,” she replied. “Emma could have told him, before he murdered her.”
Jake shook his head. “The crime scene doesn’t bear that out,” he replied. “She wasn’t tortured.”
Anna flared up. “You told me she was raped. That’s torture Jake.”
He held up a hand in conciliation. “Yeah, ok. She wasn’t attacked with a knife or gun, that sort of thing. I think that Mason had taken to her in some perverse way. That’s what Emmy told us. Then there’s that dime lying there – what’s that mean for Christ’s sake?”
Anna shook her head. “That’s sick. Symbolic, maybe?”
“Maybe it’s linked to the money. When he found out she tricked him, he wanted retribution.” He stopped and then added some more thoughts. “Look at it from his point of view. He would think we would run and hide with the money, that’s normal. Last thing we’d do is to call the cops in that situation.”
“That makes it easier then,” she said.
Jake looked puzzled. “What?”
“If anything, he’d be looking for us. All we have to do is to set ourselves up.” Anna got up and put her arm around Jake. “Is that what you want?” she asked.
Jake pulled her in close and hugged her. “You’re an angel, babe, but I have to bring him down. More than that, I want us to lead a life free of any guilt over Emmy’s death.” He kissed her. “If we’ve got to set ourselves up, then we’ll do it.”
“Jake the man’s a killer. You never even killed a fly.”
“You backing off?” he asked.
She hugged him tight. “That’s not what I meant. Just pointing out we gotta have protection, like a gun or something, to even the odds in our favor.”
Jake hugged her back. “That’s why we go and see BG. Tell him a story that will draw him out. Remember Emmy told us she gave him the gun back. Maybe he’s still got it.”
“Jake, there’s a lot of ‘ifs’ and ‘maybes’. If we set ourselves up we got to think it through. How do we do that, is just one question?”
“Yeah, you’re right. I was jumping ahead of myself. I say we truss Mason up at gunpoint in Emmy’s apartment and call Mac. I still got the keys. Let them arrest him. That would do it for me.”
“Jake you’d better be prepared to fire that gun. And he’s got to know you would.”
“Anna, we get that close to the ‘son of a bitch’, you won’t have any worries on that score, I promise you that.”
She pressed into his body and kissed him. ”Jake I’m scared.”
He tugged at her top, and kissed her back. “Me too, babe.”
