Prik Dum listened carefully to what the man in black had to say. As anticipated, he was indeed very interested, and he expressed his gratitude with another purple note. He began to sift through the computer records for a man known as Jackie Chan.
Vince was tidying up his apartment when he heard the incoming call. He looked at the display. Mr. White, good. He hit the green button.
“Mr. Red, seems like your new girl-friend is up to her neck in something that could be related to the bank robbery. Be careful, she has at least one influential contact. I was led on a fucking wild-goose chase across Bangkok and I suspect that I missed a main player at the Lucky-Nine club.”
Vince plumped up a cushion and stretched out on his sofa. “You have a full itinerary?”
“Sure. Pictures, names and places she visited. I don’t like dropping this in mid-air but I have another urgent case right now.”
“Yeah, that’s enough to get on with right now. I’ll pick them up tomorrow and settle the tab.” Vince disconnected the call. He thought, what’s happening here? Maybe he could get Nok to loosen up at dinner that night.
Vince took Nok to Gulliver’s, Soi 5, Sukhumvit Road, where they sat outside on a quiet table away from the pavement. Surprisingly, for a fashionable saloon bar that attracted a mixed clientele of tourists, ex-pats and available women, the Thai food was good quality. Nok ordered a spicy seafood salad and Vince chose stir fried chicken and vegetables in a green curry sauce, and a bottle of white wine.
By the time the bottle was half-empty, Nok was loosening up a bit and becoming more talkative. She asked Vince if he had located the black men at the Golden Palace hotel.
“They had checked out. The receptionist was no help,” Vince replied with a half-truth. “But the hotel taxi driver thought he knew where they went. I’ll check it out later.”
“Raynee, take care. Black man no good. Maybe my grandfather help, he powerful man, have many contacts.”
“Grandfather?” queried Vince. “Who’s he?”
“Have many business, but very busy working. I go tomorrow or next day.”
“Ok, I‘ll wait to hear.” Vince left it at that, and excused himself to go to the toilets.
Nok closed her eyes and went back in time. Her grandfather had raised her after her parents had abandoned her. Although she was a very pretty girl with a Masters degree, and a model figure and long legs, she was willing to be groomed in the family laundry business and accepted the mundane jobs, ending in the 7-Eleven shop hijack
That changed her life, and she made up her mind to run her own business, hopefully funded by her grandfather. She robbed her cheating boyfriend, the bank manager, and defected to Raynee. Vince could help her avenge her friend Lin and set her spirit free. Apart from that, Raynee had the most amazing creation in his combat fatigues.
When Vince returned to the table, Nok was more interested in going back to his apartment than talking. “You tired. Nok give Raynee body massage all over. You like.”
“I like, sure.”
